Veteran landlords back use of letting agents

A couple who own and let more than 700 properties have advised landlords to use letting agents to help them rent their houses.

Fergus and Judith Wilson have 40 years of experience as landlords behind them and they told the Guardian that using a letting agent was a worthwhile use of money.

The pair pay a ten per cent fee to letting agents in order to manage their properties and rent them out.

Among the other advice issued by the Wilsons is to avoid large families and only accept tenants with a rental guarantee.

They said another tip is to look particularly for older tenants, who are less likely to move on than younger people who may be renting as a short-term measure while they save up enough money to buy their own home.

This comes after detective inspector Joe McLaughlan from Operation League, a national crackdown on cannabis farms, told the Scotsman that landlords may have to agree to have their homes inspected to combat the production of the drug in rented accommodation.
