'Use tricks' to make a garden appear more spacious

People can make better use of their gardens by giving the illusion of additional space, it has been claimed, making property more appealing to prospective buyers or tenants.

Ceri Thomas, editor of Gardening Which?, said that people can "use tricks to deceive the eye" to create the "impression" of greater space, such as mirrors.

Additionally, homeowners and landlords can use trellis or plants that will "thrive" in the conditions available to "break up views", the expert suggested.

There is "nothing worse than looking at a sickly plant", she added.

She went on to state that products aimed at reducing garden maintenance - such as irrigation kits - are currently proving popular among gardeners.

Research by Halifax Home Insurance found that gardens across the UK "took a battering" during storms in the last year.

According to the firm, 150,000 were hit by storms, of which ten per cent received damage to plants and five per cent suffered damage to sheds, summer houses and other outbuildings.
