That is according to a new poll by the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), which surveyed residential landlords through its website during the fourth quarter of 2007.
More than four out of ten respondents were from the south-east of England, including London. In fact, 26.5 per cent were from the south-east outside the M25 in December, up from 22.9 per cent in June.
Just over 14 per cent were from the capital in December, down from 17.7 per cent in June.
Some 15.6 per cent were from the south-west, 17.1 per cent were from the Midlands, ten per cent were from the north-east, and 6.6 per cent were from Scotland. Just under two per cent were from outside the UK - down from 4.3 per cent in June.
Six out of ten respondents were aged between 36 and 55, with 12.8 per cent being aged 26 to 35, and 20.6 per cent aged between 56 and 65. The average age of a landlord was 45.5, up slightly from 45.0 in June.
The average time that people have been landlords is 6.2 years, up from 5.9 years in June, and the average number of rented properties in their portfolio is 7.7 - up from six in June.
