The government's decision to set up a review of the rental sector has been warmly received by all sides.

The review, which was announced by the housing minister last week, will be chaired by Julie Rugg from York University's Centre for Housing Policy.

Ian Fletcher, director for residential policy at the British Property Federation (BPF), said: "The government has shown a commitment to addressing our concerns over the barriers faced by investors and the problems encountered by tenants."

He added that the review will focus on the "bigger picture" of the housing industry.

Former BPF president, Nick Ritblat, outlined the importance of the rental market, saying: "The rented sector…has the potential to make a huge contribution not just to the supply of housing, but also to the returns on institutional savings portfolios."

Key figures from the housing industry will assemble today (February 6th) to discuss possible remedies to the current UK housing crisis.

Recent government statistics have indicated that demand for rented accommodation is 25 per cent higher than ownership, due to decreased mortgage lending and a rise in repossessions.
