Tenants 'less green' than homeowners

More than half of tenants in residential lettings consider themselves to be environmentally friendly, new research has shown.

According to a survey by Tescocompare.com, nearly one quarter of Britons that rent do not consider themselves very green at all.

By comparison, more than two thirds of homeowners rated their behaviour as environmentally friendly.

Director of commercial and partnerships at Tescocompare.com, Paul Baxter, suggests that homeownership is an important factor when determining a person's commitment to green issues.

He said: "Homeownership clearly is an important point in people's life when they re-consider their impact on the environment."

Mr Baxter also added that it was "not surprising" that homeowners were paring down their environmental effort, which could also stand to save them money as inflation rises.

The majority (51 percent) of those in residential lettings claimed that their environmental conscience was driven by a general concern about the environment.

However, more than one third indicated that higher energy bills had also had an influence on their behaviour.
