Tenants 'don't understand carbon monoxide danger'

Many tenants are not aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide, a property expert has suggested.

Some 20 million UK homes are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and people are not aware of why it is so dangerous, said Kirstie Allsopp from the Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance (COCAA).

"People don't quite understand that they wouldn't see it [carbon monoxide] coming; it's a silent killer and they can't smell it, taste it or see it," she said.

In a YouGov survey this month, quoted by the COCAA, some 20 million households did not have their appliances serviced regularly enough or did not have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted in the property.

Landlords could consider fitting carbon monoxide detectors in their properties to help safeguard tenants and ensure that potentially hazardous appliances are safely maintained through regular check-ups.

The CMCAA is a group made up of organisations looking to raise public awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning.
