Tenants are prioritising energy costs when they look for prospective properties to rent, it has been discovered.
A poll conducted by YouGov found that 22 per cent of tenants consider household bills an important consideration when choosing a place to rent.
This places it second among their considerations, behind the location of the home.
The study also found that renters are becoming increasingly worried over higher energy bills with nearly four fifths of the sample admitting they are concerned about paying them.
David Salusbury, chairman of the National Landlords Association, said that the findings showed that landlords whose properties are more energy-efficient will be at an advantage when attempting to attract tenants.
He explained: "Rising energy prices and leaner economic times mean tenants want to live in properties which are fuel efficient and don't waste money.
"Landlords who own properties without proper insulation or older, inefficient boilers could find tenants are looking for energy efficiency and ever-cheaper fuel bills."
As of today all landlords and letting agents are obliged to give prospective tenants an Energy Performance Certificate to detail energy use in their properties.
