The tenancy deposit protection scheme (TDP), which came into force on April 6th, 2007, has been described as a "success" by the NLA.

Simon Gordon, a spokesperson for the organization, maintained that the scheme had "clarified the situation and made things clearer for landlord and tenant".

He went on to say that the new system is "helping to remove some confusion", demonstrated by the fact that only a small number of disputes are referred to external adjudication.

Mr Gordon commented: "We would say that TDP has been a success. We believe that the problems that existed did not merit such a comprehensive change in the way the issue of unreturned deposits was handled, though we acknowledged there was a problem.

"Having said that we now sponsor one of the schemes and believe that TDP has led to an improvement in landlord-tenant relations as one of the potential bones of contention is open to resolution."
