There is evidence that greater financial support for both landlords and tenants is having a positive effect on the private rented sector as the British economy looks to recover from the recession, it has been suggested.
Julia Unwin, chief executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, a social research charity, explained to the Guardian how the private rented sector is now offering potential accommodation options for more marginalised and vulnerable people.
This supports the view expressed by Ian Potter, head of operations for the Association of Residential Letting Agents, last month, when he noted that buy-to-let landlords are taking a long-term approach to investment and thereby providing housing solutions for many people during the recession.
But Ms Unwin said landlords, as well as tenants, are in need of support and she welcomed the government's recognition of the need to give tenants more warning if their property owner is facing repossession.
She also said social letting agents and rent deposit schemes were proving effective in assisting activity in the rental market.
"These can minimise risks for both landlords and their tenants, improving suitability and sustainability," Ms Unwin told the newspaper.
