Study predicts hike in rental arrears

Landlords and letting agents might consider rent collection software after a study has forecast an increase in rental arrears.

Research by the NLA found that 71 per cent of landlords expect to experience an increase in rental debt, with just one per cent of investors in the residential lettings market not expecting to see an increase in tenants falling into arrears.

Some 37 per cent of respondents said they were currently experiencing no problems related to tenants struggling to meet their rent payments.

Rental property owners must do all they can to ensure that they receive rent payments on time, warned NLA chairman David Salusbury.

He said: "Regular communication between both parties is essential to head off major problems."

It comes after NLA head of communications Simon Gordon recently urged the government to extend its homeowner mortgage support scheme to cover buy-to-let mortgage holders.

This could help reduce tenant evictions and aid buy-to-let mortgage holders' plight in the current economic climate, Mr Gordon said.
