Students are increasingly being affected by letting agents charging more for rent on properties.
This is according to the National Union of Students (NUS), which suggested that some young people may be deciding where to study based on the cost of living in the town or city.
NUS president Aaron Porter stated that students should always use an accredited landlord when they rent a property privately during their time at university.
He explained that it would be a shame "if those with the aspiration and ability were increasingly priced out of certain universities or forced to study from home in order to meet the mounting costs of education".
Mr Porter added that students should try not to base their education decisions on how much rent letting agents are charging for rental accommodation.
He was commenting after research by Lloyds TSB indicated that house prices in university towns have rocketed over the past few years.
