Letting agents and housing associations will be put under scrutiny at short notice under a new inspections regime unveiled by the Audit Commission.
Residential housing inspectors will focus on the quality of one or more services, including emergency repairs and responses to anti-social behaviour.
Steve Bundred, chief executive of the Audit Commission, explains that the scheme is designed to improve services for tenants.
Commenting on a trial of the scheme, he remarked: "Instead of a few months advance warning, those taking part in the pilot programme were given five days notice.
"Each inspection team spent three days on site, focusing on the three weakest performing services."
Meanwhile, letting agents in the Peak District were recently given advice by the Letting Agents Drug Watch to help spot when tenants were engaged in illegal activity.
Commentingon the scheme, PC Kevin Lowe told Bakewell Today: "It's important we take steps to ensure our area stays a nice and safe place to live."
