Safety concerns in property management

News Category: Management

Property expert Kirstie Allsopp has raised concerns that landlords are not responsible for ensuring their properties are safe from the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Tenants are currently responsible for checking their appliances for carbon monoxide leaks, said Allsopp, former presenter of Channel 4 programmes Location, Location, Location and The Property Chain.

"At the moment it is not up to the landlords. We would love it if it were but for the time being it's down to individuals to safeguard themselves and their family," she said.

Landlords could consider fitting their properties with carbon monoxide alarms which cost £15 each.

This is a small price to pay to ensure that residents of a property are protected, Allsopp added.

Landlords who have their gas appliances regularly checked by qualified professionals might improve their reputation for taking public safety seriously and attract greater interest from tenants.

A YouGov survey published by the Carbon Monoxide Consumer Awareness Alliance earlier this month showed that 20 million UK households do not have their appliances serviced enough, or do not have carbon monoxide alarms fitted.
