The private rented sector is to be the subject of a major independent review, it was announced yesterday (January 24th).
The review, commissioned by housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper, will seek to improve the sector by looking at the problems faced by tenants and landlords.
According to a Citizens Advice Bureau report last year, 20 per cent of tenants were unhappy with repairs carried out by their landlord but were wary of making an official complaint.
Landlords in turn can face problems with poor tenants.
Ms Cooper commented: "Too few people are aware of their rights and responsibilities, either as tenants or landlords. We have seen a big increase in the private rented sector and particularly in buy to let. It is important we review the impact of this."
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, welcomed the announcement, saying that the review would provide "crucial evidence" of the sector's importance within the property market.
"This review will consider the impact of the growth of the buy-to-let sector as well as explore how the regulatory changes have sought to raise standards in the sector," he added.
According to the NLA, the private rented sector accounts for roughly 12 per cent of UK households.
