The trade association for residential lettings in the UK has raised questions about forthcoming new legislation which aims to offer more protection to tenants.

According to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla), the new law will give those living in letting property seven weeks' notice in the event of their landlord having their home repossessed but could be changed for the better.

In a statement, Arla said the legislation - which is due to be implemented in April - could be changed to give even further notice.

Tenants could be notified "after a repossession order had been granted" as this will lengthen the timeframe for them to find a new property, the association suggested.

Expressing further concerns, Arla commented: "If the order is not granted, and tenants unknowingly walk away from the property, they will have broken the law by reneging on a legally binding contract."

Earlier this month, the trade group called on the chancellor Alistair Darling to offer more help to tenants during April's Budget speech.
