Renters advised to check leasehold bills from landlords

Renters should check their leasehold bills from landlords to see if there are any service charges added on that they could question, it has been stated.

According to rental site Upad.co.uk, the bills are comparable to those in a restaurant, and renters should check that service charges are acceptable before they agree to pay.

James Davis, chief executive officer of the site, explained that questioning extra charges with a landlord is always worth considering.

"A lot of property holders know that people just pay it and don't look at it. You should ask for supplementary evidence to support it," he commented.

The Leasehold Advisory Service, the government's free legal advice group, is also encouraging people to check their bills for charges they may wish to question.

Tony Essien, chief executive of the Leasehold Advisory Service, stated that charges must be "reasonably incurred".

He advised people to query charges with their landlords if they are unsure what they are for or do not believe they are warranted.
