Rented property 'must be made energy efficient'

News Category: Legal

Those responsible for the management of rented property have been advised to ensure their portfolio meets basic standards of energy efficiency as part of the UK's carbon reduction initiative.

A new proposal put forward by the Energy Saving Trust has called on the government to make it impossible to rent or sell any property with an Energy Performance Certificate rating of F or G from 2015 onwards.

The organisation feels that this will provide a feasible timescale for landlords and letting agents to take financial advice and seek available grants to bring inefficient properties up to E grade standard at least.

Doing so could prove invaluable to providing significant long-term savings on energy expenditure, as well as helping the country to achieve its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, in accordance with the Climate Change Act of 2008.

A spokesperson for the trust said: "Regulation has to be considered to drive action on the most energy inefficient homes."
