Home refurbishments could benefit landlords looking to sell off their residential lettings, as well as those who wish to continue renting out.
According to the Federation of Master Builders, features such as a modern kitchen and bathroom make a big difference to the appeal of a property.
The organisation said that renovations were very important when selling a house.
Brian Berry, director of external affairs for the FMB, commented: "Certainly a modern kitchen is very important, and you can get your money back on that.
"If you spend about £5,000 - £7,000 you will get more than your money back because a lot of people that are buying in a falling housing market will not want to be investing more money."
Mr Berry added that while more elaborate renovations may not give you your money back, up to date kitchens and bathrooms were certainly a "good selling point".
According to the FMB's recent State of Trade Survey, there has recently been a decrease in enquiries regarding all types of work on residential buildings.
