Homeowners, including landlords, can use the addition of a loft conversion to make a property more appealing.
That is according to Andrew Skipwith, co-founder of RatedPeople.com, the business directory, who noted that loft conversions could represent a "shrewd investment".
He said that typically, property owners could add one third of their space up on top, putting in a "huge bedroom with an en suite bathroom" or a "couple of smaller bedrooms".
Mr Skipwith asserted: "A loft conversion adds an average of 15 per cent to your house value."
However, he advised that a conversion needed to be "done right" in order for it to benefit the value of a property.
He said: "It has got to be done right. Certainly with a major piece of work like a loft conversion
you really don't want to be messing around with people who you don't trust to do a good job for you."
Mr Skipwith warned that people could "actually damage the value" of their home by having a poorly constructed loft conversion.
