Storm damage is proving costly for homeowners, including landlords.

According to Halifax Home Insurance, severe winds caused £4.5 billion worth of damage in 2007, affecting the roofs of 1.5 million homes in 2007.

On average, each property required the replacement of 127 tiles.

However, roofs were not the only areas affected, as water leaking through missing tiles damaged ceilings and electrical fires, as well as causing damp and flooding.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "The damage caused by high winds runs into billions of pounds each year. Immediate action is vital if householders are to avoid seeing the problem exacerbated by water coming through missing or broken tiles.

"It's advisable for homeowners to conduct a thorough inspection from ground level following high winds and call in a professional if they are concernedthere may be damage."

Halifax urged property owners to take preventative measures against storm damage, recommending that they regularly check the condition of their roofs.
