Property owners 'should not attempt boiler adjustments'

Homeowners, including buy-to-let landlords, should not attempt to tackle improvements to their boilers on their own as this could have disastrous consequences.

That is the advice of Andrew Leech, technical consultant to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), who said that property owners could create "really big problems" for themselves by undertaking such work.

He warned people against trying to carry out any improvements relating to a gas boiler, noting that botched DIY jobs could prove costly.

Mr Leech commented: "If it's proven that you have been tampering with your gas or electricity supply then it would definitely affect your claim to an insurance company.

"If it was a major problem they would send an assessor along who would look very closely at what had been done in the house so you have to be very careful."

According to recent research from Zurich Insurance, experts have had to be called in by 16 per cent of budding home improvers in order to deal with the fallout of a DIY catastrophe.
