UK homeowners, including landlords, should safeguard their properties against damage from severe weather.
That is according to Halifax Home Insurance, which has issued advice to property owners amidst reports of strong gales throughout the country and forecasts of snow on the way.
Among the preventative measures proposed, Halifax recommended that in the event of a windstorm people should secure any potentially hazardous objects such as garden furniture and bicycles.
To prepare for icy weather, it was advised that property owners ensured the tops and sides of water tanks were insulated.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance said: "With the average claim for storm damage costing around £1,000, it is advisable for home homeowners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of damage to their homes, and also ensure they have adequate home insurance cover in place."
Warnings of severe gales in Wales, south west England, London and the south east have been issued by the Met Office.
