Property owners advised against large DIY jobs

Homeowners, including landlords, have been warned that they risk invalidating their home insurance policies by carrying out large home improvement jobs themselves.

According to research from Halifax Home Insurance, 24 per cent of men have attempted to fit an entire new kitchen, while more than a quarter have tried their hand at electrical wiring at home.

It was also revealed that older people are more confident at attempting the bigger DIY jobs, while property owners in London are least likely to undertake large home improvements themselves.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "TV home makeover shows make it all appear so simple and it's easy to forget that these are highly-skilled professionals.

"In reality, trying to tackle certain areas you are not qualified for such as electrics or plumbing could invalidate your home insurance policy, leaving you liable for any subsequent damage.

"We'd recommend using a reputable tradesman rather than going it alone."
