The private rented sector has a "key part to play in tackling the housing supply problem" and landlords are being put off entering the market by a mountain of red tape.
That was the view expressed by shadow minister for housing, Michael Cove, speaking at a Conservative Party fringe meeting hosted jointly by the British Property Federation (BPF) and the National Landlords Association (NLA).
He went on to say that the rented sector was a major factor in economic growth as it affected the ability of people to move around the country.
Ian Fletcher, director of residential policy for BPF, speaking at the meeting, said: "Different government departments often give landlords conflicting signals about government intentions and it's vital they adopt a coherent cross-departmental strategy for tackling the housing crisis."
The BPFand NLA are both trade associations - the former looks after its membership comprised of companies or individuals who own or invest in property, the latter promotes and protects landlords' interests.
