Private landlords 'get vote of confidence from students'

A local survey has suggested that a large majority of university students prefer private rented accommodation over living in larger developments housing ten tenants or more.

The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University sent out an online questionnaire to 5,300 students and just over two-thirds of the respondents said they preferred to rent out homes privately.

It comes after Unite chief executive Mark Allan told the Financial Times last month that with 600,000 more students expected to start studying at UK universities in the next six years, the niche area of the property market has a positive outlook for the future.

Students prefer the independence of living in smaller homes, where they get to choose their housemates and enjoy a greater freedom of lifestyle, the survey found.

Large bedrooms, living space and good locations close to the city and university were positive experiences students have had from using private rented accommodation.
