Local planning authorities have managed to continue their better performance levels in handling planning applications.

Figures show that 85 per cent of planning authorities either met or exceeded the government target of deciding 60 per cent of major planning applications within 13 weeks.

As well as this, 93 per cent met their target of deciding 65 per cent of minor applications and 91 per cent decided 80 per cent of other planning applications within eight weeks.

There were 64 local planning authorities that showed an improvement in performance. Some of these decided 100 per cent of major decisions within the 13-week target period.

Planning minister Iain Wright said: "I am pleased to see that performance is remaining steady overall and that a significant number of authorities are continuing to improve their performance."
