Buy-to-let mortgage holders looking to increase the desirability of their properties when it comes to selling should focus on internal space.

Strutt & Parker Lane Fox indicated that storage space was a prime concern for those looking at purchasing a home.

Lulu Egerton, a partner at the property consultants, highlighted the importance of space for homebuyers, saying: "Space is one of the most sought after commodities that house buyers are looking for."

According to Ms Egerton, there are multiple ways in which homeowners, including landlords, can expand the amount of space in a property.

"Nowadays people are becoming much more creative on how best to open up their space internally, whether it be to create basements or extend existing basements, digging down and out to create under floor vaults and under pavement cellars."

She added that people "need as much storage as possible" for a wide variety of items.
