Now is the "peak time" for letting agents keen on taking advantage of student residential lettings, research by propertyfinder.com has suggested.
In contrast to the ongoing turmoil in the housing market, prospective buyers and tenants are showing a preference for university towns, according to the company's June survey.
University towns made up 16 of the top 20 most popular places to look for rental accommodation.
In a further indication that prospective landlords could be examining buy-to-let opportunities, university areas made up 12 of the equivalent top 20 buyer hotspots.
Nicholas Leeming, director of propertyfinder.com, also highlighted the buyers and renter focus on securing residential lettings.
He told Mortgage Solutions: "Our two most famous university rivals continue to draw people to their cities, and this is repeated in university towns across the country.
"This is the peak time for sorting out student accommodation. Landlords are looking for new properties and students are looking for somewhere to live."
However, recent research by Accommodation for Students found that residential lettings make up around 40 per cent of the average students weekly spending, reports the Independent.
