Deposit protection information should be on offer to the growing number of overseas students taking up tenancies across the UK, it has been suggested.
The vast majority of landlords and rent management software users enjoy an amicable relationship with their tenants, but foreign students need to be made aware of laws which affect their rights, said David Salusbury, chairman of mydeposits.co.uk, a government-backed tenancy deposit scheme.
"Without knowledge of the rules regarding tenancy deposit protection, students could be at risk of not receiving a fair hearing when it comes to getting their deposit back," Mr Salusbury said.
It comes after research by the Accommodation for Students website found that the average student rent is more than £245 a month.
Tenancy deposit protection legislation was introduced in England and Wales in April 2007, but students who don't know the rules could be at risk of not being treated fairly when they try to get their deposits back, Mr Salusbury added.
Meanwhile, students are among the younger generations that will suffer the most from the emergence of a global economic recession, according to Lucy Parsons, senior economics researcher at Reform.
