County Armagh experienced the fastest house price increase of all UK counties in the past decade, it has been revealed.

The Halifax County House Price Survey, which is conducted annually, has indicated that property prices in the Northern Irish county rose by 331 per cent over the last ten years to reach an average of £220,229 at the end of 2007.

County Tyrone and County Antrim, also in Northern Ireland, were revealed to be the second and third top performing UK counties.

Surrey was discovered to be the most expensive county, with the average property costing £364,115.

Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, observed that it was predominantly counties outside southern England that had recorded the best house price performances over the past ten years.

"Four of the five counties with the highest price growth are in Northern Ireland reflecting the strength of thehousing market there over the past few years."

Mr Ellis added that since 1997 all UK counties had experienced "at least a doubling" in prices.
