The private rentals sector in Northern Ireland is to come under closer legal scrutiny with the launch of a new strategy of legal reforms.
Social development minister Margaret Ritchie has proposed a new set of regulations designed to help protect the rights of landlords and tenants through closer monitoring of disputes, particularly those concerning deposits.
The minister stated that the changes were being sought in order to improve the rental sector's standing in the current property market, and invited those involved in the industry to lend their views on the proposals.
Ms Ritchie said: "I want to work with landlords and help them become more competent and more professional. In turn they can make a great contribution to meeting housing need."
Earlier this month, Arla called for greater reform of the UK rental industry to encourage modernisation, specifically suggesting the introduction of new tax incentives for landlords to renovate their properties.
