The government is forcing people into home ownership despite many being unable to afford to purchase property, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has stated.
NLA public affairs manager Vincenzo Rampulla described the idea the UK can be a country where everyone is able to own their homes, rather than relying on landlords and letting agents to rent property, as "crazy".
He explained that the new housing minister Grant Shapps has fallen for the myth that this is the best housing model to pursue.
"Even now, as we claw our way back from a recession caused (at least in part) because of this preoccupation with home ownership, it remains the accepted orthodoxy," added Mr Rampulla.
He added that buying property remains out of reach for many people, which means letting agents and landlords will still be required to provide rented accommodation.
Last month, Rick Flay, a director at letting agent Belvoir, stated that demand for rented property has led to his firm seeking out new homes to rent out.
