NLA: Check out tenants to limit rental arrears

Failing to check out potential tenants can lead to landlords being hit with rental arrears, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has warned.

The NLA claims that situations where a tenant fails to pay rent can take up to six months to resolve and cost the landlord affected as much as £6,000.

In order to enable landlords to carry out checks, the NLA recommends they use their Tenant Check service - a piece of residential lettings software that allows users to verify potential tenants' identity.

It also affords the chance to ascertain whether tenants are in employment and scans for black marks on their credit records.

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said: "NLA Tenant Check is a simple and affordable tool which allows landlords to reduce the risk of possible future problems with rent arrears and gives them the opportunity to paint a clearer picture of their prospective tenants.

"By simply entering a few details about a new tenant into the system, the landlord will be given a profile of that person's credit history which will allow them to make an informed decision about their ability to keep up with rental payments."
