The National Landlords Association (NLA) has called for rogue landlords to be punished by local authorities.
A new investigation by housing charity Shelter has found that some landlords are bringing the private rented sector into disrepute, with their rundown properties also blighting communities.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, is therefore calling on councils to do more to fight the threat of rogue landlords.
"We roundly condemn the worst excesses in the private-rented sector where a small minority of landlords choose to exploit their tenants by offering sub-standard property which can endanger lives," he said.
The NLA chairman added that landlords who flout the industry's regulations should be severely punished.
Ian Fletcher, director of policy at the British Property Foundation, also called for stricter punishments for rogue landlords.
He said these landlords can distort the reputation of the private rented sector as a whole, adding that people need to be made more aware of their rights by the government.
