The National Landlords Association (NLA) has backed calls for greater governmental support of landlords who face financial difficulties during the recession.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, has stated that the government needs to realise the importance of the rental sector to overall market health and to provide more options to assist landlords struggling with interest payments and non-payment of rent.
Mr Salusbury backed recent suggestions from lovemoney.com for a buy-to-let version of the Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme, and drew attention to NLA figures which suggest that 44 per cent of landlords have experienced problems with rental arrears in the last six months.
He said: "Although during economic turbulence many people struggle financially, this level of non-payment of rent can have direct and severe consequences for both landlords and their tenants."
Earlier this month, Mr Salusbury called on landlords to exercise greater vigilance in taking appropriate precautions to prevent the practice of cannabis farming in rented properties.
