Landlords in the Newham area are to be surveyed by the local council in order to help authorities shape future social housing plans.
Thousands of private landlords and letting agents in the area will be contacted by Newham Council in order to gauge opinion on a new scheme that would see 250 empty houses and derelict properties being renovated for use as homes by March 2010.
The council is already co-operating with the private rental sector on social housing initiatives such as the rent scheme, which sees people who cannot afford a deposit placed in let accommodation, with a bond being paid to the landlord.
Councillor Andrew Baikie, executive member for housing said: "I would strongly urge our private landlords to participate in the survey as their opinions really matter in order to shape and deliver excellent housing to meet the needs of our diverse population."
Last week, Bristol City Council announced it would be holding a seminar to allow landlords to discuss the proposed private rentals sector licensing laws.
