Landlords and letting agents will have soon be able to benefit from a new device to help them with their property management.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change today announced that smart meters will be introduced in all UK properties between now and 2020.

According to the government department, the new system will help homeowners such as landlords - as well as tenants - when it comes to meter readings.

Real-time electricity and gas usage levels will be displayed on the screen, while the initiative is designed to be good for the environment.

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband remarked: "This is another part of our Great British refurb. The meters most of us have in our homes were designed for a different age, before climate change."

He added that smart meters will also bring to an end the need for energy bill estimate readings.

It is currently the responsibility of landlords and letting agents to inform new tenants of meter readings prior to them moving into one of their properties.
