New properties offer features that could make them attractive rental properties.
John Slaughter, director of external affairs at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), said that a lot of the criticism regarding new developments was "wide off the mark".
He maintained that "the industry is doing a lot of good things", with new homes being built to higher standards of energy efficiency than older properties.
Mr Slaughter also said that new homes were more suited to the contemporary lifestyle, offering modern equipment and design.
He added that these properties also presented advantages from an insurance perspective.
"New homes, in almost all cases, benefit from a ten year warranty which is another advantage you wouldn't get with an existing home.
"That would cover you for any structural problems with the house post-construction and there is also an insurance policy to cover all work in relation to that, as well as any post-occupancy issues you may have."
