Naming and shaming rent dodgers 'can help landlords'

Landlords and councillors in Burnley have spoken out in favour of the naming and shaming of persistent rent dodgers.

Representatives from the East Lancashire Landlords Association and Burnley Council have endorsed the use of measures such as internet databases and the erection of signs outside the homes of bad tenants as means of warning landlords of repeat offenders.

The recommendations come after This is Lancashire reported that landlord Taylor Housing had placed a warning placard outside the former home of a tenant who had left one of their properties in disrepair and owing them around £1,500 in rent.

Burnley Council housing executive member Martin Smith said: "It is a real problem for landlords when their tenants don't pay and sometimes, in desperate measures, they have to do these things."

The news comes after a survey conducted by Arla earlier this month revealed an increase in landlords and letting agents whose tenants were either struggling or unwilling to pay rent.
