Bad letting agents are few and far between, according to one expert, who claimed the proportion for the industry is "not that high".
Spokesman for the Tenancy Deposit Scheme Malcolm Harrison urged people not to "tar all letting agents" with the same brush.
He explained how generally most companies operate fairly and consider the wellbeing of their tenants as very important.
Discussing the safeguarding of deposits, Mr Harrison noted that all letting agents are legally required to use a tenancy deposit protection scheme to ensure money is kept safe.
It was suggested this is the agent's responsibility rather than the landlord, as they can "get muddled, don't know what to do or forget to do it".
Mr Harrison reassured renters they should feel confident when handing over a deposit for a property.
Elsewhere, landlords were recently reminded by the National Landlords Association to provide a proper tenancy agreement that both they and the tenant will sign.
