Demand for rented accommodation has increased with some people forced to turn to lettings agents to find them a house, research has suggested.
ARLA found most landlords believe people are becoming reluctant tenants as they cannot afford to buy their own homes.
Letting agents are now being advised that there has been a shift in the market, with 41 per cent of members surveyed saying there were more tenants than properties.
Ian Potter, operations manager at ARLA, said the findings were good news for lettings agents.
He said: "This rise in tenants is a positive sign for the industry, as it indicates increased market movement."
However, Simon Gordon, head of communications at the NLA, said that rather than people just being unable to afford to buy their own home, they were instead choosing to rent as a lifestyle choice.
He said: "Renting is no longer the ugly sister of the property market."
