Letting agents and landlords could be set to benefit from first-time buyers' inability to get a foot on the housing ladder.
According to Easyroommate.co.uk managing director Jonathan Moore, the amounts of money being asked for deposits on houses are "colossal".
He added that thousands of people could therefore be priced out of buying a home and may instead have to rent from a landlord or a letting agent, reports Home Move.
Mr Moore said: "Thousands of first-timers are being kept from getting their first foot on the property ladder, despite the higher stamp duty threshold."
However, first-time buyers may find their opportunities increase during the course of 2010, after Halifax reported a 0.1 per cent drop in house prices in April 2010.
Letting agents have signalled their preference for a Conservative government, in the wake of last week's general election.
A poll by Estate Agent Today found that 57 per cent back the Conservatives, compared to 21 per cent for the Liberal Democrats and 17 per cent for Labour.
