Letting agents have seen an increase in demand from young people for rented properties at the start of 2010.

Research conducted by lettings portal lettingsearch.co.uk found 30 per cent of people looking for a new place to live in January wanted to leave their parental home as they had found a job.

The latest government statistics showed 26,000 fewer young people were unemployed in December.

Phil Calderbank, director at lettingsearch.co.uk, said the government figures had "played a part in shaping some firm resolutions from this group to start the year on their own two feet".

Letting agents could also see people who want to move in with their partner start looking for rented accommodation, with 18 per cent citing this as a reason for seeking a new place to live.

However, lettings agents should not expect to see too much business from people already living in rented accommodation as the research found only two per cent of people wanted to live with different friends.
