Arla has stated its concern about rental arrears after a National Landlords Association (NLA) survey revealed that more than 40 per cent of landlords have suffered from the problem over the past year.
Ian Potter, Arla operations manager, said the figures corresponded with similar research carried out by the letting agents organisation, which found nearly 30 per cent of landlords had seen an increase in tenants struggling to pay their rent.
Explaining the figures, Mr Potter said: "Rental arrears are more common during a recession as redundancies occur and tenants' financial stability changes."
He told landlords that Arla-registered letting agents could help them avoid problems by carrying out credit checks and drawing up tenancy agreements.
The NLA survey also revealed that three-quarters of landlords have experienced issues with rental arrears at some point in their careers.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said it was important for landlords to keep in touch with current tenants so they feel comfortable approaching their landlord before their rental arrears problems become too serious.
