Letting agents 'can help to combat cannabis farming'

Letting agents and landlords have been reminded of the potentially important role they can play in stamping out cannabis farming in rented property.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has called on property managers to make sure they keep informed and aware of any potentially suspicious activity among tenants.

This may include blacked-out windows, pungent aromas around the property and large quantities of electrical equipment and chemicals being delivered.

The constabulary warned that failure to intervene in such activity could end up costing property owners, as cannabis farming can cause extensive damage to houses, which will not be covered by insurance.

GMP's warning comes after the occupant of a house in Failsworth was discovered to have been growing around 70 cannabis plants.

Police Constable Andy Pickering said: "This is not a harmless enterprise. Drug abuse is a serious problem and drugs can often be contributing factors in other serious crimes."

This comes after Surrey Police last week seized £50,000 of cannabis from a rented property in Epsom after being tipped off by the landlord.
