Several letting agents and landlords in Liverpool have called for proper regulation of the residential lettings sector.
Speaking at a property auction in the city, Richard Globe, secretary of the Merseyside and Wirral Property Landlords Action Group, said that there were too many rogue landlords and letting agents currently operating in the UK.
He told the Liverpool Daily Post: Why should practitioners in the lettings industry be any different from those in sectors like law, accountancy or medicine?
"In those areas, you are not allowed to offer unregulated services."
His calls for regulation were backed up by several other professionals attending the auction, including letting agent Mark Duffy.
Mr Duffy said regulation had made insurance brokers a lot more professional and the same would happen in the residential lettings sector.
Last week, Rics also urged the government to regulate the industry and noted that only 50 per cent of letting agents were affiliated to a voluntary regulatory programme.
