Letting agents and landlords are being urged to check their properties after the prolonged icy weather resulted in an increase in burst pipes.
Fraser Pithie, senior operations manager at Severn Trent Water, explained that because of the coldest spell in 30 years, water inside pipes may have turned to ice, which expands pipes, resulting in splits and joints being forced apart.
When the ice then thaws, the pipe is in danger of bursting.
Mr Pithie said: "We'd urge people to get all their properties checked now to make sure they don't suffer the unwanted consequences of pipe bursts or leaks."
Letting agents and landlords with multiple properties are at risk of an expensive bill if they do not find the problem early, with the cost of a burst pipe estimated by Halifax senior claims manager Martyn Foulds to be around £2,000.
Halifax advises leaving the heating on low to avoid this happening and estimates one in six home insurance claims to be for burst pipes.
