The view from the residential letting industry regarding the government's new Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme (HMSS) has been announced.
Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla) operations manager Ian Potter has welcomed the initiative, saying it helps owner-occupiers in the current tough economic climate.
However, the Arla representative called on the government to do more to protect tenants in rental accommodation.
"We don't expect the government to subsidise investor landlords through any support packages but we do expect that tenants be taken into consideration in any new measures introduced at this time," Mr Potter explained.
He added that one solution would be for ministers to call on local authorities to "alleviate the situation" by taking on buy-to-let properties under empty-dwelling management orders.
The Council of Mortgage Lenders, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and British Bankers' Association are among the industry groups to give their backing to the HMSS.
