A letting agent has expanded the number of houses for rent on its books by 50 per cent following increased demand for rental accommodation.
Bulmers Letting Agent, in Yorksergate, Malton, said the number of houses it has to rent is at its highest level for two years, reports the Gazette & Herald.
It comes amid significant falls in house prices across the UK and the impact of the credit crunch on consumers' finances, which has led many would-be homebuyers to turn to rented accommodation instead.
Kate Miller, lettings manager at Bulmers, told the newspaper: "There are more properties available to rent because people can't sell their homes.
"People are telling us that they are struggling to get mortgages, and therefore they are having to rent."
A spokesperson for the Association of Residential Letting Agents recently predicted the private-rented sector to become "patchy" in 2009.
Letting agents could consider property software to assist with their local marketing strategies.
