Letting agent expects rents to rise with inflation

A letting agent has stated that she expects rents to rise in line with inflation during 2010.

According to Silvia Eldawi, lettings director for Northfields Estates, there are fewer properties available and more people looking for rented accommodation, so rents will go up.

In a column for The Negotiator, she backed the National Landlords Association in stating that proposals for a website where letting agents can be rated by users are "unworkable".

She said: "The main issue with subjective feedback sites is that negative experiences considerably outweigh the positive, and this will not serve to improve the quality of the private rented sector."

Ms Eldawi added that she is appalled by the increases to Tenancy Deposit Scheme fees.

She said letting agents should have been given more notice of the price hike, in order to amend their business plans accordingly.

Earlier this month, Countrywide Residential Lettings, the largest letting agent in the UK, left the Tenancy Deposit Scheme to sign a contract with government-approved tenancy deposit protection scheme mydeposits.co.uk.
